St Michael & All Angels Church

Appleby's parish church dates back to the early 14th century, although it is likely that there was a church on this site from Saxon times.

church1_small.jpg (6816 bytes)

Inside is  the tomb of Sir Edmund de Appleby and his wife Lady Joan, who lived at the Moat House around the time of the church's construction.  Sir Edmund fought at the Battle of Crecy with King Edward III, and his family continued to occupy the Moat House until 1560.

Socially and geographically, the church is the centre of the village.  As Appleby nestles in its valley, its tall spire is visible from every direction.

 Letter from The Rectory

On a recent day off, Hazel and I planned a trip out. We wanted to visit Wimpole Hall, near Royston in Hertfordshire - there was a restaurant for lunch before touring the house.

We took a motorway-avoiding route that brought us to St Neots: that was as far as we got. Having stopped for a break, we began exploring the town, found a riverside pub for coffee, and decided to stay for lunch. After that we could have travelled the few extra miles to Wimpole, but chose not to. Instead we turned north, and enjoyed a lovely drive home.

In the days when we had to go out to earn our living, Saturdays were very precious. Often we would plan a day out, but there would be ‘just a few things to do’ before we could set off. Those chores would be done grudgingly, as we complained through gritted teeth how all this stuff was delaying our enjoyment. By the time we were ready to leave we were so frazzled that the shine went off the day.

“Oh, it’s easy for you” someone might say in response to this. “But I’ve got a family to get ready before I can go out; and it’s no good promising Alton Towers, then thinking the kids will be happy with anything less”. I can sympathize with that.

Brian de Palma’s brilliant film The Untouchables portrays the first encounter of agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) with his cop partner Jim Malone (Sean Connery). Ness is troubled because he can make no headway in catching the bad guys. Feeling sorry for himself, he petulantly drops paper on the walkway as Malone approaches. This exchange follows; Malone: “Pick it up”. Ness: “Don’t you have anything better to do?” Malone: “Yes; but I’m not doing it right now”.

Christians have a name for enjoying the mundane: ‘living in the present moment’. One day I shall meet my Maker and be asked, “So; how did you enjoy the world I made for you?”. I don’t want my answer to be, “I was so busy doing stuff that I missed everything on the way”.

Next time you find your six-year old counting the stripes on their socks when you’ve told them for the third time to get dressed quickly, see if maybe they have something to teach you about using time wisely.

Holiday well this summer - but enjoy the journey too.

PARISH NOTICES

Back to Church Sunday
28th September

‘Back to Church’ is a national church initiative that does exactly what it says: invites people to come (back) to church. Last year Bishop Tim asked Loughborough churches to try using the occasion: it was a success, and all churches in Leicester Diocese are invited to take part this year. In The Appleby Group all four churches will offer services that day, so everyone will have the chance to attend their village church. During the summer, keep a look out for notices and information about the services taking place in your local church.

Worship for July and August 2008 in The Appleby Group
Children, young people and adults of all ages are welcome at all services

Changes to pattern of services on fourth Sundays

From July there will be an additional act of worship at 10.30a.m. on fourth Sundays in Appleby Church. This is particularly aimed at less mobile members of the church, and at parents who bring their children to Appleby Sunday Club and then want a place to worship at the same time. Called Sunday People, worship will be led by members of the congregation; the service will broadly follow ‘Morning Worship’, but with no preacher.

The fourth Sunday evening service of holy communion will be suspended while PCC Worship Committee assesses the impact of these changes.
